History of Tiffany & Co.
Charles Lewis Tiffany and John Young founded Tiffany & Company on September 18th, 1837. It was established
then as Tiffany & Young, a stationary and fancy goods
emporium and was located at 259 Broadway in New York
City. The total sales on the first day totaled $4.98
with every product marked with a non-negotiable sales
price, which made headlines as a new revolutionary
policy. Soon after opening Tiffany & Young the Tiffany Blue was adopted for their catalogs, bags,
brochures, and boxes and became a part of it's
branding. Today this color is a registered trademark
of Tiffany and Company as Tiffany Blue.
In 1845 the first Tiffany catalog was published, 8
years after they were founded. Catalogs are still
being published and distributed today. 14 years after
being founded in 1851 Tiffany's silver designs started
to capture the worlds attention. They were the first
American company to use the 925/1000 sterling
standard, which was later adopted as the United States
sterling standard. The United States also adopted
Tiffany's Platinum purity standard in 1926.
Just 16 years after opening Tiffany & Young, Charles
Tiffany gains control of the company and renames it
Tiffany & Company. This is when the firm's emphasis on
jewelry was established. A nine-foot bronze coated
wooden statue of the mythological figure of Atlas
supports a clock that is installed over the entrance.
Till this day Tiffany & Co. carries an entire Atlas
collection of jewelry, watches, accessories, and home
items.
In 1862 Tiffany creates and supplies the union army
with swords, surgical implements, and flags for use in
the civil war. Tiffany & Co. also created
gemstone-encrusted swords for generals Grant &
Sherman, and Admiral Farragut to be presented with for
their services.
Tiffany & Companies exquisite silverware is honored
in 1867. They are the first American firm to win and
award for the excellence of its silverware. The Paris
Exposition Universelle presented the award to Tiffany & Co. The Paris Exposition Universelle was what they
called a world faire in 1867.
Tiffany & Company introduces the beautiful Audubon
flatware pattern in 1871. It still ranks as Tiffany's
best selling flatware to this day 137 years later. The
Audubon design was inspired by 19th century Japanese
nature paintings. Tiffany & Co. now sells over 15
different flatware patterns aside from their top
selling Audubon collection.
Many of Tiffany's designs and pieces have made their
way into museum collections around the world. The
first of which was a Copper, Silver, and Niello
Tiffany pitcher that the Boston museum of fine arts
acquired in 1873. Other museums that have acquired
Tiffany pieces include the Morse Museum, the Met (the
metropolitan museum of art), and many museums
nationwide and overseas that include Japan and
Britain. The Met collection includes earrings,
brooches, vases, and others that range from 1854 to
the 1900's.
The Tiffany Diamond is one of the world's largest and
finest fancy yellow diamonds. The cut diamond is
128.54 carats with 90 facets, 32 more facets than an
average brilliant cut diamond. The raw uncut rough
diamond weighed 287.42 carats. It was discovered in
South Africa in the Kimberly diamond mines in 1877 and
was purchased by Charles Tiffany in 1878. Today it
sits on the first floor of Tiffany's fifth avenue
store in New York for Tiffany's millions of customers
to see. Charles Tiffany purchased the diamond for
$18,000; in 1983 the stone was valued at $12,000,000.
The Tiffany diamond is the 7th largest yellow diamond
in the world and the 2nd largest canary yellow
diamond.
The famous Tiffany setting was introduced in 1886. It
is a 6-prong diamond solitaire engagement ring. The
setting maximizes the diamonds beauty by raising it
into the light and up from the band. Tiffany has
introduced several different settings since 1886. In
1999, over a hundred years later Tiffany & Co.
introduces Lucida, the first setting since the classic
Tiffany setting. The Lucida diamond cut is a patented
Tiffany original. In 2003 Tiffany & Co. introduces the
Tiffany Legacy collection. The Legacy collection
includes engagement rings and bands with a patented
cushion-cut center stone that is surrounded by bead
set diamonds. The Legacy collection was inspired by
Edwardian designs from the Tiffany archives. The
Legacy collection has grown to include earrings,
pendants, and bracelets. In 2007, inspired by the
128.54 carat Tiffany Diamond, Tiffany & Co. introduced
the Tiffany Novo, a brilliant cushion cut ring.
In 1887 Tiffany purchases some of the French crown
jewels. These along with the Tiffany Diamond, prompt
the press to call Charles Tiffany the king of
diamonds. The son of Charles Tiffany, Louis Comfort
Tiffany establishes the Tiffany Art Jewelry
department in 1902. He established this department to
manufacture his very artistic jewelry and enamels.
Louis becomes the firm's first artistic director after
his father Charles Tiffany passes away.
Tiffany & Companies chief gemologist aids in the
adoption of the metric carat as a weight standard for
gems in 1907. This standard is adopted
internationally. George Kunz, Tiffany's chief
gemologist was the first gemologist hired by a jeweler
when Tiffany & Co. hired him. He supervised the
cutting of the Tiffany Diamond in 1879, after studying
the stone for an entire year.
1930 begins the Tiffany & Co. requests for Trophy
designs. The New York Yacht Cub asks for an 18k gold
trophy cup for Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea mogul. In
1967 the NFL (National Football League) awards the
first Super Bowl trophy. This Tiffany creation was
renamed in 1970 to the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl
trophy. The first and second Super Bowl trophies were
awarded to the Green Bay Packers, coached by Vince
Lombardi. The trophy is valued at $25,000; made
entirely of sterling silver and weighs seven pounds.
After the trophy is awarded it is sent back to
Tiffany's to have the winning teams name engraves
along with the final score of the game. In 2004 NASCAR
(national association for stock car auto racing)
commissions a handcrafted design by tiffany artisans.
It takes over 135 hours to create the trophy, which
weighs 27 pounds and is 2 feet tall. It's first
recipient was Kurt Busch in 2004 after winning the race for the chase at the end of the 2004 racing
season.
In 1940 Tiffany & Co. moves its headquarters to 57th
street on 5th avenue in New York City. Today this is
still its main location, along with many other
locations both nationwide and internationally. Tiffany & Companies first domestic store outside of NY opened
in San Francisco in 1963. Only a short 9 years later
Tiffany shares their presence in another country in
1972, they open a Tiffany boutique in the Mitsukoshi
department store in Japan. Tiffany & Co. opens their
first uropean store on Old Bond Street in London.
This initiated their expansion into the European
markets. Tiffany's no operates 64 stores in the United
States and 103 stores internationally as of January of
2007.
The book that really puts Tiffany's on the map is
published in 1950. Truman Capote's Breakfast at
Tiffany's becomes a best selling novel and Audrey
Hepburn is cast for the movie. In her publicity
photo's for the film's release in 1961, Hepburn wears
a ribbons necklace designed by Jean Schlumberger which
was centered by a removable clip that was set with the
128.54 carat Tiffany Diamond.
In 1956 Jean Schlumberger, the Parisian master jeweler, opens his salon at Tiffany & Co. This Tiffany designer created the bird on a rock brooch that currently mounts the Tiffany Diamond. In 1995 Jean Schlumberger is honored by the Musee des Arts Decoratifs at the Louvre museum in Paris. This marked only the third time a jewelry designer has been so honored by the museum. He was honored with a retrospective entitled A diamond in the city. Elsa Peretti introduces her exclusive jewelry and home collections in 1974. In 1996 the council of fashion designers of America names Elsa Peretti the accessories designer of the year. Her collections include diamonds by the yard, open heart, teardrop, sevillana, and the bean. Paloma Picasso introduces her jewelry designs at Tiffany and Co. in 1980. She is the daughter of artist Pablo Picasso and her designs for Tiffany's include the loving heart and sugar stacks. In 2006 Frank Gehry introduces his jewelry designs for Tiffany and Co. He is the winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize (1989) and is said to be the world's greatest living architect. His buildings include the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Dancing house in Prague, Walt Disney concert hall in LA and many other masterpieces. His Jewelry designs for Tiffany's include Axis, Equus, Fish, Flux, Orchid, Torque, and Tube.
In 1968 Tiffany and Co. designs for the Whitehouse. A collection of Whitehouse china service is designed by Tiffany's, a design that features ninety American flowers. The request for the design was made by First Lady Mrs. Lyndon Baines Johnson. The china was then manufactured in the United States by Castleton China.
In 1987 Tiffany and Co. offers its stock for trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Tiffany's was then under the control of a management group, led by then chairman William R. Chaney. Their symbol on the NYSE is Tif. Not only did they now offer their stock for trading in 1987 it was also Tiffany & Co. 150th anniversary.
In 2000 the Tiffany & Co. Foundation is born. This foundation gives grants to non-profit organizations dedicated to the education and preservation of the arts and environmental conservation. The foundation helps in the areas of responsible mining, coral reef conservation, urban parks and land protection, arts and education, and exhibitions and cultural institutions. Grants to non-profit organizations include the New York Restoration Project, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, World Wildlife Fund, and Several more.
Tiffany & Co. embarked on an extensive restoration
project that strictly adhered to state historic
preservation office guidelines to restore a 25 story
Beaux-Arts building in 2007. The building was designed
by architect Frances Kimball and completed in 1907.
Tiffany's was very committed to preserving the beauty
of the original building and opened in 2007 at 37 Wall
Street.
